The latest from CBI Brussels

No knee-jerk over financial markets

CBI director-general Richard Lambert recently discussed the current state of the financial markets and the global economic turmoil with European Internal Market commissioner, Charlie McCreevy.

Richard emphasised that a considered approach rather than a knee-jerk reaction to the situation is required, in light of forthcoming proposals from the Commission related to Capital Requirements and Credit Rating Agencies.

They also discussed recent European Parliamentary activity on private equity and hedge funds, and Richard urged the Commissioner not to take any action towards further regulation in this area.

EU politicians hear UK consumer concerns

Members of the CBI's Consumer Affairs Panel met senior officials and politicians from the European Commission, European Parliament, the UK Permanent Representation to the EU (UKRep) and BUSINESSEUROPE.

The visit took place ahead of the launch of the Consumer Acquis, also known as the Consumer Contract Directive. Members lobbied the Commission and the Parliament on collective redress, stressing the need to avoid the introduction of a US-style class actions system when the proposals are issued in December.

Other issues ``included the consumer scoreboard, retail financial services and international consumer issues.

CBI keeps up pressure on emissions trading

As members of the European Parliament begin debating possible compromise amendments on the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, the CBI has been actively lobbying key MEPs in order to emphasise several aspects of the proposals that are of vital importance to CBI members.

These include the need to maintain the evidence-based process for assessing carbon leakage risk, improving the definition of new entrant and small emitter, advancing the start of allowance auctioning and giving careful scrutiny to any international agreement.
