Humber 2030 Vision: decarbonising the UK’s largest industrial cluster
Vision for the Humber’s clean growth future launched in Hull.
In 2022, the CBI announced the Humber as the location for its first national cluster demonstrator, focussed on supporting the UK’s largest industrial cluster to reach net zero.
In November 2022, more than two-dozen partners across the Humber came together to launch Humber 2030 Vision – showcasing for the first time the full scale of the industrial decarbonisation and clean energy opportunity in the region.
In 2023, the CBI will continue to support the cluster’s communication and engagement, building on the Humber 2030 Vision shared narrative. There will also be a new workstream exploring decarbonisation supply chain finance and in the autumn the Humber will host a regional meeting of the World Economic Forum’s transitioning industrial clusters initiative.
The World Economic Forum has recognised the Humber as one of the world’s most significant decarbonization opportunities. Jӧrgen Sandstrӧm, Head of Energy, Materials, Infrastructure Program – Industrial Transformation summed up how important the region is:
“There are few places around the world more crucial to the road to net zero and industrial decarbonisation than the Humber – it is a location from which so much can be achieved and learned".
Matthew Fell, CBI Chief Policy Officer said:
"There are plenty of reasons why the CBI is partnering with firms in the Humber cluster. It’s a critical piece of the jigsaw in decarbonising the UK: with almost half of all industrial emissions coming from the Humber and Teesside, the collaboration with the broader East Coast Cluster will be pivotal.
“Second, it’s a win-win for jobs and growth. It will help maintain the viability of traditional industry sectors and, at the same time, create new jobs in innovative, green technologies.
“And, critically for us, it’s a blueprint for fostering economic clusters in the UK – a demonstrator that the CBI wants to champion and learn from in equal measure as the best way to bring private sector leadership to bear on levelling up".
