The countdown to the General Election has already started
Join us in Westminster as the CBI raises the business voice at this pivotal moment.
It’s a critical time for the UK. Economically, politically, and for business.
The latest GDP and labour market statistics show we can’t rest in the pursuit of sustainable growth. While our own research reinforces just how much is on the line. The CBI’s Growth Indicator suggests that firms intend to cut back on capital expenditure over the next 12 months. The CBI forecast shows that UK productivity will remain 2% below its pre-pandemic trend at the end of 2024. And many of our members are telling us they’ll be going into winter facing a difficult balancing act given all the pressures they face.
To add to the uncertainty, this tough economic outlook coincides with rapid shifts in the UK’s political landscape.
In England, Metro Mayor elections are around the corner. In Scotland, the First Minister and their Cabinet are shaping policies to grow the economy. In Northern Ireland, work continues to get Stormont back up and running. And in Wales, a leadership contest is coming – with Mark Drakeford stepping down in 2024.
Nationally, every political party is gearing up to fight next year’s era-defining General Election.
Right now, it means business needs a stronger voice than ever. Because it’s businesses up and down the country, in every sector, who – with the right conditions – can generate the ideas, the investment, and the jobs to build a more productive, competitive economy to benefit all.
This is at the root of the CBI’s new mission as we focus relentlessly on sustainable growth. It’s behind our big campaign calls for the Autumn Statement.
And we’ll build on this as the political parties craft their election manifestos. They need to be anchored on economic growth and the competitiveness of the UK economy. And business must be at the heart of this conversation.
Our General Election Countdown conference will raise that business voice.
