"It is incumbent on both sides to work together & settle outstanding issues" - CBI Director-General on NI Protocol
24 June 2021
Tony Danker, CBI Director-General, said:
“The Northern Ireland Protocol is not perfect, but it can be made to work. For many firms it is working well already, it presents exciting opportunities for Northern Ireland – bridging a combined market of over 500 million people.
“That is why the EU and UK must seize the opportunity to secure its implementation. The flow of medicines, food and parcels into Northern Ireland’s homes, hospitals and businesses have all benefited from existing easements, but permanent lasting solutions are needed without delay. It is incumbent on both sides to work together and settle these outstanding issues.
“After months of deliberations, it is time to focus on outcomes not legal precedent or self-interest. Let's see the people of Northern Ireland being put first, starting with a bespoke veterinary agreement and trusted trader arrangements for the movements of goods and medicines in the UK internal market.
“Time is of the essence, it is now time for both sides to work together.”
