Our response to the Online Safety Bill

Matthew Fell, CBI Chief UK Policy Director, said:

“The UK is showing global leadership in shaping the future of the internet. Regulation can and must play a leading role in tackling online harm, particularly amongst the most vulnerable, and help increase trust in the technology that people use every day.

“The Government’s approach represents a step in the right direction, one that makes the UK a safer place to be online whilst taking a risk-based approach to targeted regulation.”

On the scope of the Online Safety Bill, Matthew said:

“From telecoms companies to review websites and message forums, these new rules will potentially impact thousands of businesses. Clear guidance will be needed quickly from Government to ensure all firms are able to meet their ‘Duty of Care’."

On fines, Matthew said:

“The threat of tough sanctions are a core component of the new regime, but should not be the first resort of the regulator. What the Government must ensure is that these eye-watering fines do not impact the UK’s ability to attract and grow new digital businesses.”

On the role of Ofcom, Matthew said:

“Businesses strongly welcome the expanded role for Ofcom. It must be given the resources it needs to succeed, so it can maintain its mantle as a pragmatic and collaborative regulator.”
